Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The Board of Supervisors regularly issues support letters that align with the 2025 Legislative Platform. These letters advocate for adequate and ongoing federal and state funding, timely distribution of resources, increased local authority, and flexibility in administering and providing services.

Summary of Request

Current law governs the certification of registered environmental health specialists by the State Department of Public Health, outlining application, examination, and renewal fees. It establishes educational requirements, limiting examination eligibility to those who meet these criteria, and restricts applicants from retaking the exam more than once every two years, as well as after failing twice without specified waiting periods. The law requires a registry of certified specialists and defines their scope of practice, including food protection, housing, and hazardous materials management. Local health departments may employ these specialists for enforcement, while trainees must complete an approved training plan under supervision for up to three years. Proposed changes include allowing reexamination after 90 days, revising educational standards, extending trainee supervision to five years, and adding body art and medical waste to the scope of practice.

Alternative Action/Motion:

Do not ratify letter of support and provide alternative direction.
