Discussion and Possible Action Including Creation of a Board of Supervisors Standing Committee Comprised of Supervisors McGourty and Haschak on the Topic of Economic Development

(Sponsors: Supervisor McGourty and Supervisor Haschak)

End

Recommended Action/Motion:

recommendation

Create a Board of Supervisors Standing Committee comprised of Supervisors McGourty and Haschak on the topic Economic Development.

End

Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The Board has appointed Supervisors Haschak and McGourty to work as an Ad Hoc committee during the past year with West Company consultants Economic Development Contract on various economic development initiatives (CERF, SMEDD). Additionally, they have also convened community stakeholders and assisted with grant writing. County Counsel has recommended that due to activities that are beyond the scope of the original Ad Hoc, an ongoing Standing Committee would be more compliant with the Brown Act.

Summary of Request

There is a need for regularly scheduled meetings for planning and reporting on economic development items involving the BOS, CEO Office, consultants, NGO’s, and stakeholders in the community. Activities include coordinating grant applications, economic studies, and participation in regional economic development boards including Redwood Region Community Economic Resilience Fund, Sonoma Mendocino Economic Development District.   Additionally, business owners and other stakeholders want a forum to share information and ideas periodically on both Economic Development and the business environment in the County. The Economic Development Standing Committee will meet quarterly and then advises the full BOS on Economic Development policy and plans.
