Summary of Request

During the month of May Lyme disease awareness month is observed to raise public awareness of the disease. Lyme disease is a potentially serious bacterial infection spread by certain black-legged ticks and is a significant public health problem in Mendocino County, having been detected in up to a third of rural residents in some communities. In Mendocino County an average of 7% are infected with the spirochete that causes Lyme disease. The risk of contracting a tick-borne disease is present year-round in California, and nymphal ticks, which are the size of a poppy seed, are most likely to cause Lyme disease in humans, are almost impossible to see, and their bite is painless. Only 25-30% of patients with Lyme disease remember a tick bite.
