Provide direction to staff regarding additional staff support specifically for the Board of Supervisors, by determining whether additional support is warranted for Board of Supervisors for tasks including: community outreach, communications with state and national elected representatives and agencies, assisting the BOS with policy research on specific subjects, managing the implementation of the Strategic Plan including assisting to align agenda planning annually and reporting Strategic Plan progress on a regular basis, and support for specific BOS initiatives.

Summary of Request

This discussion would give an opportunity to determine if Board members believe that they have adequate support to develop effective policies for Mendocino County and serve the needs of their constituents. In the past, the BOS had staff assigned for direct administrative assistance, but these positions were eliminated due to budget constraints. The BOS recognize that the CEO’s Office is very productive and has a large workload, and staff time presently is fully subscribed.   Other counties have staff reporting directly to the BOS to assist them. No decisions would be made in this discussion, further studies would be initiated if warranted. Since our budget at this time is limited, it is not anticipated that any new positions can be created. Rather, amendments to our Strategic Plan section on An Effective County Government could be added to address these needs when future budgets can support changes
