Ratify submission of application by the Library for the California State Library’s Lunch at the Library Summer 2025 grant and authorize acceptance of award of $27,323 to provide library services to youth at summer sites throughout the County.
End
Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
The Board previously approved a Lunch at the Library grant award on February 27, 2024.
Summary of Request:
The California State Library provides an annual funding opportunity for libraries to coordinate with local food providers to serve lunch and provide educational activities for students up to age 18. During the summer months, youth have limited access to healthy meals and learning and enrichment programs. Lunch at the Library helps prevent the “summer slide” through healthy meals, reading, and educational opportunities.
This is the third year that Mendocino County Library has applied for this grant which provides the program at five of our library branches. The program serves our communities in a holistic way, creating a summer safety net by feeding both stomachs and minds. Mendocino County Library is partnering with local school districts which will provide the meals and the library staff will provide the enrichment activities. Grant funds will be used for supplies and materials, employee expenses, and promotion of the program. The Library has been awarded $27,323 to fund this very popular summer program.
The Lunch at the Library Program supports the County Strategic Plan goal of a “Safe and Healthy County” by providing educational enrichment activities during free lunch events for youth in Point Arena, Fort Bragg, Willits, Round Valley, and Ukiah. The Library is requesting retroactive application submission approval and per Policy No. 25, the CEO authorized the submission.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Provide alternate direction.
