Summary of Request:
USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Program Disaster Repair Grants is designed to repair community facilities damaged in incidents such as CY 2022 and CY 2023 Presidentially declared disasters. Mendocino County saw two declared winter storms. DR- 4683 covers December 27, 2022 through January 31, 2023 and DR-4699 which covered February 21, 2023 through July 10, 2023. During the recent storms, the County experienced severe weather conditions that caused numerous trees to fall due to high winds, heavy rains, and unprecedented snowfall. This resulted in hundreds of trees blocking the County's 1,015 miles of maintained roads. To address this issue and keep the roads open, the Department of Transportation secured additional equipment through rentals to clear and chip the debris. In preparation for future severe weather events, the Department of Transportation has requested the purchase of two portable woodchippers using USDA grant funds, which will be placed at their Covelo and Point Arena yards.
