Summary of Request:

The Board is asked to recognize the World Polio Torch Relay and the Rotary Clubs of Fort Bragg,

Mendocino and Gualala, which will carry the torch through their coastal communities on Oct 10, 2026 and

Oct 11, 2026. The coastal events are part of Rotary District 5130’s relay from Crescent City to Petaluma,

running from Oct 2, 2026, through Oct 24, 2026, World Polio Day.

On Saturday, the Fort Bragg segment begins at 10 a.m. at MacKerricher State Park and follows the

Coastal Trail to Todd’s Point for the handoff to Mendocino. Mendocino’s bicycle relay begins at

approximately 1 p.m., travels along the coast and through the Village, and ends at Rotary Park, where a

community celebration will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Gualala’s segment begins Sunday at approximately

11 a.m.

The relay raises awareness and funds for Rotary’s worldwide polio eradication effort. Sponsorship

opportunities are available across all three coastal segments, with 100 percent of sponsorship proceeds

supporting the polio campaign. Eligible Rotary Polio contributions are matched two-to-one by the Gates

Foundation.

The torch was carried in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Torch Relay by Catherine “Cathy” Ritter at age

23. The relay honors Cathy’s memory following her death in 2025 and the work of her stepfather, Bob

Rogers, a polio survivor and Rotary District 5130’s PolioPlus Chair. The proclamation commends the

participating clubs, volunteers and supporters and encourages public participation. Adoption is

ceremonial; no County funding is requested.
