The Board of Supervisors annually adopts a Proclamation honoring the recipients of the Arts Champion Awards.                     

 

Summary of Request

The Arts Council of Mendocino County annually honors an artist, an individual, a business, and an educator or school with the distinction of Mendocino County Arts Champion. These individuals and entities have been nominated by the community and selected by the Arts Council of Mendocino County Board of Directors. It is requested that the Board of Supervisors adopt a Proclamation recognizing these Art Champions for their accomplishments and contributions to the county.

 

The 2023 Arts Champions include the Pear Tree Center/Cire Equity for Business Arts category, having demonstrated sustained and generous support of individual artists and arts organizations This business commissions public art for the benefit of the entire community and partners in innovative and creative ways with the arts community to express our unique sense of place.

 

Solange Roberdeau is a 2023 Arts Champion in the Artist category for the quiet excellence of her body of unique abstract prints, her service as an educator for diverse communities of students through Art Explorers, Inc., the Get Arts in the Schools Program (K-12), and Mendocino College, for her contributions to public art in Mendocino County, and for her curatorial work.

 

Jess Thompson is the 2023 Mendocino County Arts Champion in the Individual category, for her leadership, long-term vision, and dedication to the coastal arts community, her deep commitment to creating a thriving and networked rural ecosystem for individual artists, arts organizations, youth, and the wider community of residents and visitors.

 

Doug Browe is the 2023 Arts Champion in the Educator category (in memoriam) for his passionate life-long dedication to mentoring and inspiring students in the ceramics field and for serving as a mentor for his students through life as well as their own creative growth.

 

This Arts Champion Awards Proclamation presented by the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors celebrates the culture of arts in our community coinciding with National Arts and Humanities Month - a collective celebration of culture in America.

 

The Proclamation supports the Board of Supervisors’ Strategic Plan Priority of a Thriving Economy by encouraging local artists and exhibits in our community which are valuable in attracting visitors and increasing revenue.
