Summary of Request:

Ozone is a federally regulated air pollutant that is formed by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds in the presence of heat and sunlight. The Mendocino County Air Quality Management District operates the ambient ozone monitoring program for the County of Mendocino. The District’s ozone monitoring equipment is currently housed in an aging, unreliable shelter which no longer meets operational standards required for air monitoring. Funding for a replacement shelter has been secured and is included in the District’s budget for this fiscal year. A Request for Proposal, prepared in coordination with the Executive Office, has been completed, and the evaluation committee has selected the proposal that best meets the District’s needs under Policy 1 guidelines. Board approval is now required to move forward with the purchase of this fixed asset. The new shelter will improve the reliability, security and stability of Mendocino County’s sole ozone monitoring station and support high-quality data collection.

Alternative Action/Motion:

Do not approve the District’s request and provide alternate direction to staff.
