Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The Board routinely approves Library grants for books and programs.

Summary of Request

The Library is committed to equity and inclusion and is continually looking for ways to reach out to community members that may not be regular library users. This Save the Children Grant will help to fund a series of outreach events that will reach underserved and underrepresented children in Spanish speaking and Indigenous communities. The outreach events will provide fun activities and books written by and for members of their communities as additions to the library collection and supplemental books for their home libraries.

Additionally, supplies for bilingual StoryWalks will be purchased and staff will coordinate the displays with local businesses. The StoryWalks will feature sequential pages of bilingual books in downtown store windows which will encourage family and community involvement in the literacy project. StoryWalk® was created in 2007 by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, in collaboration with former staff member Rachel Senechal, and is a registered service mark of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalks now exist across the U.S. and worldwide in 13 countries including Germany, Canada, England, Bermuda, Russia, Malaysia, Pakistan and South Korea.

.

By encouraging literacy learning activities among underserved youth, the Library is helping the County to achieve the goal of “An Effective County Government.” The Library is requesting retroactive application submission approval and per Policy No. 25, the CEO authorized the submission.
