Summary of Request

Mendocino County Health Services recognizes May 2026 as Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health America established Mental Health Awareness Month in 1949 to reach individuals across the nation by reducing stigmas, and teaching about signs of mental illness. One in five adults have a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress and one in twenty adults experience a serious mental illness. Half of mental illness manifests in individuals by the age of 14 and three-quarters by the age of 24; there is an increase in youth being diagnosed with depression nationwide. The pathway to improving the negative outcomes of untreated mental illness is through community outreach, with events such as county health fairs, farmers markets and other community gatherings to empower individuals with the support and resources they need to thrive.

Mendocino County Health Services is dedicated to raising awareness of statistics, educating the community, reducing stigma and helping people recover from the consequences of untreated mental illness. During the month of May, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services attends and hosts events throughout the community to share educational materials and resources and to raise awareness for mental health symptoms, treatment, and services.
