Summary of Request

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Detective Unit is called upon to investigate crimes as well as coroner’s investigations. When an investigation involves a death linked to a fire, the local Ukiah Valley Fire Authority (UVFA) provides personnel to help with the scene investigation and determination of cause and origin of fires when fatalities are involved.   The fire investigators also assist with determining cause and origin of fires associated with other investigations which can be criminal in nature such as illicit drug laboratories and negligent industrial processes.  This partnership is extremely valuable to MCSO and produces results that aid in the search for answers at the crime scene and beyond.  This contract will memorialize historical practices and define clear expectations regarding the services desired and performed. A start date of July 1, 2018 will allow services that UVFA has rendered to MCSO over the past year to be reimbursed. The services rendered affect all Supervisor Districts.

The contract will be a stepping off point to work with fire districts throughout the county allowing collaborative efforts to investigate suspicious fires as well as crimes involving fire.
