Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

On January 9, 2024, the Board approved the Proclamation for the 2024 National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Summary of Request

As of 2024, there are over 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving in the United States. As of December 2024, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office has 118 sworn law enforcement officers. Other law enforcement agencies in Mendocino County include local Police Departments, the California Highway Patrol, State Parks, CalFire, Bureau of Land Management, Department of Fish and Wildlife, United States Forest Service and Federal Drug Enforcement. From January 1, 2024, through October 31, 2024, there were 54 law enforcement officers feloniously killed in the line of duty; a near 6 percent increase compared to the number of officers killed during the same period in 2023.

This National Day of Appreciation for Law Enforcement Officers allows us to express gratitude and appreciation to the law enforcement officers who serve and protect communities, often putting their lives at risk. The day highlights the sacrifices made by officers, including long hours, stressful situations, and the personal risks they undertake to ensure public safety. Everyone is encouraged to thank an officer for their service on this day and all throughout the year.
