Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

On December 17, 2019, the Board adopted a proclamation recognizing CALFIRE for exceptional service through significant fire prevention and mitigation activities completed in the Ukiah Valley.  On October 6, 2020, the Board invited CALFIRE to provide this presentation on vegetation management work to be completed prior to the 2021 wildfire season.

Summary of Request

As the intensity, size and number of wildfires throughout the region have been increasing dramatically in recent years, CALFIRE’s Mendocino Unit has provided invaluable leadership in their willingness to design and rapidly implement multi-jurisdictional fire fuel reduction projects on a landscape level.  Work completed last year, west of Ukiah, included a network of ridgetop dozer lines, a fuel break along the hills, and broadcast burns.  In addition, CALFIRE completed a critical, strategic fuel break along the Firco Road north of Brooktrails which was instrumental in emergency response this year.  CALFIRE is the only agency in this area with the knowledge, skill, and resources to plan and complete these critical and massive projects.  The Board and the community recognize that these strategic and large-scale fire fuel management projects are needed annually.  As we’ve seen, partnerships can be formed to assist in moving CALFIRE’s goals and priorities forward at a scale and speed which wasn’t possible just a few years ago.  This presentation is intended to allow Chief Gonzalez to share with the Board strategic, landscape-level projects CALFIRE is prioritizing for completion around Mendocino County in this short window of time before the next wildfire season.
