Summary of Request:
This item proposes and recommends that the Board of Supervisors appoint Anthony Adams as the Mendocino County Alternate Defender and approve the Employment Agreement as the Alternate Defender commencing on January 4, 2026. The agreement provides an annual salary of one hundred ninety thousand dollars ($190,000) and total annual compensation of three hundred twenty-three thousand dollars ($323,000), including salary and benefits.
The Alternate Defender provides court appointed legal representation to indigent clients when the Public Defender has a conflict of interest in a case and maintains independence from the Public Defender and District Attorney. The Alternate Defender is appointed to matters ranging from misdemeanors to capital cases, select custody proceedings under the Welfare and Institutions Code and certain guardianship matters under the Probate Code.
