Summary of Request

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The intent behind World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to increase awareness and prevent abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic situations affecting elder abuse and neglect. Since last adopted, the Proclamation expanded from recognizing a “day” to recognizing the entire month of June. The Proclamation has also expanded to include awareness of dependent adult abuse, including a new title of “Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.”
