Summary of Request

Mendocino County’s most recent budget was balanced with the use of one-time occurring funds and, as such, has been looking to cut costs and raise revenue.  One initiative created to accomplish that goal is the Golden Gate Bridge Initiative.  Its stated mission is “[t]o close the structural budget deficit through the study of county-wide operations and to create a sustainable framework that supports continual organizational improvements into the future.”  In that same, or similar, light, County Counsel’s office has reviewed current Mendocino County Boards and Commissions to determine which are required under California law, and which are not.

Each active Board and Commission costs the County resources to oversee, manage, and maintain.  As the County looks to make its operations as efficient as possible, the Board of Supervisors needs to know what is required under California law.  As such, this information is being provided to the Board of Supervisors so they can make an informed decision on whether to maintain the current number of Boards and Commissions or begin the dissolution process for select Boards and/or Commissions that are not required under California law.
