Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
On February 3, 2026, the Board of Supervisors ratified the submission of an application by the Library for the California State Library’s Lunch at the Library Summer 2026 grant and authorized acceptance of an award of $23,764 to provide library services to youth at summer sites throughout the County.
Over the past three years, the Board of Supervisors has ratified the Library’s submission of applications and authorized acceptance of awards from the California State Library’s Lunch at the Library program to provide library services and educational activities for youth at summer meal sites throughout Mendocino County.
Summary of Request:
The California State Library provides an annual funding opportunity for libraries to coordinate with local food providers to serve lunch and provide educational activities for students up to age 18. During the summer months, youth have limited access to healthy meals and learning and enrichment programs. Lunch at the Library helps prevent the “summer slide” through healthy meals, reading, and educational opportunities.
This is the fourth year that the Mendocino County Library has applied for this grant, which provides the program at six library branches. The program holistically serves local communities, creating a summer safety net that feeds both stomachs and minds. The Mendocino County Library is partnering with local school districts, which will provide meals, and the library staff will provide enrichment activities. Grant funds will be used for supplies and materials, employee expenses, and program promotion. The Library has been awarded $23,764 to fund this popular summer program.
The Lunch at the Library Program supports the County Strategic Plan goal of a “Safe and Healthy County” by providing educational enrichment activities during free lunch events for youth in Point Arena, Fort Bragg, Willits, Round Valley, Laytonville, and Ukiah.
The Library is now requesting approval and authorization from the Board of Supervisors for the County Librarian/Director to accept the award of $23,764 so that the Library may finalize the grant contract and move forward with planning for this year’s grant activities.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Do not approve and provide direction to staff and return the item to staff for alternative handling.
