Summary of Request

The California State Library offers the Book to Action Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding opportunity for public libraries, which provides book-themed programming supplies and training in order for staff to provide materials and programs on important issues in the community and to encourage reading, community discussion, and action.

The Library’s Book to Action selection is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, with the goal of helping to foster an inclusive environment. The local Pomo people will have a platform to discuss and share traditions and knowledge and discuss needs for equity in a welcoming library space. It is also an opportunity for the greater community to become more aware of the diversity in the region. The Library is an inclusive, safe space for the public and books like Braiding Sweetgrass help to reinforce that.

All library branches will participate in book discussions with equitable access to be provided by the Bookmobile. The funding provides for copies of Braiding Sweetgrass to be distributed to the public, supplies for children’s and adult’s crafting programs, read-alike books for children and teens, and for publicity materials. Community partners include the Mendocino County Pomo tribes, Mendocino Land Trust, and a Native Liaison to Point Arena school district.
