Summary of Request:

Due to the increasing demand for clean firm power in the California energy market, coupled with the rapid pace of innovation in the geothermal industry, interest has greatly increased in exploration and development of geothermal resources within the Region. Currently, the industry has limited visibility into the surface compatibility of development, which may lead to the risk of developing in areas that are not viable. Ultimately, extending permitting timeframes and increasing project risk. On March 18, 2026, the County of Sonoma entered into grant agreement No. GEO-25-001, to generate comprehensive datasets and geospatial analysis through the development of a cutting-edge three-dimensional subsurface models, provide county staff direct exposure to next-generation technologies, and foster meaningful engagement within the community and tribal partners to enhance local capacity for geothermal planning and permitting in the Sonoma-Lake-Mendocino region. The subrecipient agreement received by the County of Mendocino will establish a collaborative regional effort to conduct geothermal studies that evaluate physical and environmental constraints, while incorporating tribal and stakeholder engagement to identify suitable sites for large-scale geothermal energy projects.
