Summary of Request

February is recognized nationwide as Black History Month, a tradition observed by every U.S. president since 1976 to honor the achievements, contributions, and lived experiences of Black Americans. In 2026, this observance marks 100 years of national Black history commemorations, rooted in the work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and other scholars who formalized the study and celebration of Black history beginning in the early 1900s.

Black History Month grew out of community-led traditions that marked emancipation, freedom, and resilience, including Juneteenth and other commemorations observed long before they were formally recognized. These efforts emphasized that understanding history is essential to shaping the future.

Here in Mendocino County, Black history is part of our local story. From early Black homesteaders and laborers who helped build Northern California communities, to the ongoing contributions of Black residents in agriculture, education, public service, the arts, and community leadership, Black history continues to shape our county. Local museums, libraries, and community organizations play an important role in preserving and sharing these stories.

As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of United States independence, Black History Month remains an opportunity to reflect on our shared history in a way that is inclusive, accurate, and grounded in lived experience. This agenda item recognizes the importance of that reflection as Mendocino County approves this resolution
