Summary of Request

The Sheriff’s Office entered into a cooperative agreement with CalTrans on June 1, 2013, to provide one correctional deputy and a crew of County inmates to perform roadside maintenance and repair work as specified by CalTrans.  On May 5, 2015, the Board approved an amendment to extend the end date of the Agreement from May 31, 2015, to May 31, 2016.  The Agreement with CalTrans for County inmate services has been a successful venture.  Inmate crews, supervised by a County Correctional Deputy and project management by CalTrans, perform roadside maintenance and repair work on State highways that traverse the County.  Projects can include litter pick up, weed removal, brush clearing, ditch clearing, fire break clearing, vegetation maintenance, water basin cleaning and other such duties. The State of California, Department of Transportation CalTrans is offering to renew this revenue agreement for two years (August 1, 2016, to July 31, 2018).
