Summary of Request:
Health and Human Services Agency, Family and Children’s Services (FCS), is committed to excellence in the delivery of child welfare services in a child-focused, family centered and culturally competent manner. Because that commitment includes providing services for clients of FCS, FCS requests Board approval of the agreement with FIRST 5 Mendocino to provide Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) classes countywide.
FIRST 5 Mendocino introduced Triple P to Mendocino County for families with questions about young children’s behavior. The Triple P program has now evolved to help families with children of all ages find positive solutions to child behavioral problems, and help with children who have a delay or disability. FIRST 5 Mendocino is the only agency in the county that provides and coordinates training certification for Triple P instructors, and that helps ensure fidelity to the training model.
At the request of FCS, FIRST 5 Mendocino has continued to expand the offering of Triple P classes countywide, especially in outlying, coastal and north county areas. This service is available free of charge to any parent in Mendocino County, in order to help reduce child abuse and neglect, and to assist FCS in providing parenting education to families who are in formal cases with FCS. In addition, the Mendocino County Family Law Court refers parents who are separating to the Transitions Groups.
In Quarters 1 and 2 in Fiscal Year 20/21, there were 35 participants in 9 classes, 3 of which were offered in Spanish. Per post-tests and participants’ feedback, most participants rated improvements in parenting practices of consistency, coercive parenting, positive encouragement and parent-child relationship, and in family adjustment including parental adjustment, family relationship and parental teamwork.
