Summary of Request:
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has enacted a Behavioral Health Workforce Development (BHWD) program to address the critical shortage of behavioral health providers in the state. BHWD has Behavioral Health Mentored Internship Program (MIP) grant funds available to assist organizations in developing and implementing in-house mentored internship programs to assist in the treatment and recovery of patients with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, or co-occurring disorders.
On March 15, 2022, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved Behavioral Health and Recovery Services’ (BHRS) submission of a grant application for CDHCS BHWD MIP funds. BHRS received the original MIP grant in 2022, and has worked with Cal Poly Humboldt to develop an MIP program. The program includes building a consortium with community behavioral health partners, and additional educational institutions to allow interns to enhance skills in different settings. BHRS expects this continuing partnership with the Cal Poly Humboldt Social Work Program to give Mendocino County BHRS access to a pool of motivated individuals who will bring fresh thinking and innovation to the BHRS workplace. The program will also provide interns with the ability to train within a variety of programs, which will provide broad education and experiences for future employment.
On May 26, 2023, BHRS received a notice of preliminary award for continued participation in the MIP project, as a candidate for Round 2 funding up to $321,006.84 for a period of performance from October 1, 2023, through December 31, 2024. The Round 2 grant Agreement is forthcoming, and will process through County approvals once received.
