Summary of Request

The Mendocino County Museum is seeking direction from the board to explore the feasibility of implementing a new model of operation for the Museum. An alternative model in which a non-profit foundation oversees the administration of the Museum under an operating agreement with the county could provide cost savings to the general fund and strengthen community partnerships. After researching how other Museums operate statewide, there is evidence that numerous county museums utilize unique operational models that include the utilization of non-profit partnerships to manage daily operations and expenses. The Kern County Museum Model was identified as having a clearly outlined model that could be emulated here in Mendocino County. The Museum would like to research and bring back a detailed proposal and prepared plan for approval and possible implementation.  By re-envisioning the operation of the Museum and collaborating with community partners, the County can save General Fund dollars and create a sustainable operations plan for the Museum, supporting the Board of Supervisors' Strategic Plan priority of "An Effective County Government."
