Summary of Request:
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has enacted a Behavioral Health Workforce Development (BHWD) program to address the critical shortage of behavioral health providers in the state. BHWD has Behavioral Health Mentored Internship Program (MIP) grant funds available to assist organizations in developing and implementing in-house mentored internship programs to assist in the treatment and recovery of patients with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, or co-occurring disorders.
Mendocino County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) applied for the MIP grant on February 18, 2022, and if awarded funds, will work with Cal Poly Humboldt to develop an MIP program. The program will include building a consortium with community behavioral health partners, additional educational institutions, and local providers to allow interns to enhance skills in different settings. BHRS expects this partnership with the Cal Poly Humboldt Social Work Program to give Mendocino County BHRS access to a pool of motivated individuals who will bring fresh thinking and innovation to the BHRS workplace. The program will also provide interns with the ability to train within a variety of programs, which will provide broad education and experiences for future employment.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Return to staff for alternative handling.
