Summary of Request

This presentation will provide an overview of neglected and abandoned vineyards in Mendocino County and explain how these sites can become pest and disease reservoirs threatening the economic viability of active vineyards.  When the Agricultural Commissioner deems these neglected and abandoned vineyards to be a public nuisance, it requires the County’s engagement.  Existing County Code provides authority to address any public nuisance, and new State legislation authorized under AB 732 provides additional tools to complement this existing authority.  The Department’s preferred approach includes education, and good-faith efforts from landowners to voluntarily abate nuisance conditions.  Stronger response from the County may be required in certain instances, to ensure the protection of active vineyards and/or the larger farming economy.
