Recommended Action/Motion:
recommendation
Ratify submission of application by the Library to apply for the California State Library’s Lunch at the Library program to provide educational activities for Mendocino County youth five summer lunch sites throughout the county.
End
Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
The Board of Supervisors approves grant applications for the Library each year. Last fiscal year that included the Book-to-Action grant and Zip Books grant applications on September 13, 2022: item 3x and 3y; Lunch-at-the Library program on February 28, 2023: item 3s; etc.
Summary of Request:
The California State Library provides funding opportunities each year, and this is the second year that the Library is applying for the Lunch at the Library program to provide fun and educational learning activities for youth visiting summer lunch sites throughout the county. The funding amount will be disclosed by the California State Library in the grant award, dependent on the previous program and new application. The funding would provide for each participating library branch to purchase supplies for a library “pop-up” at the lunch sites. The library partners with local agencies such as school districts which provide children who have access to free lunches during the school year the same food security during the summer break.
The Lunch at the Library program helps to introduce children and families taking advantage of the free summer lunches to the many programs and services that are available at or from their county library. It also contributes to the popularity of the free lunch program, which provides for healthier children and families.
By encouraging healthy meals and providing learning activities among youth, the Library is helping the County to achieve the goal of a “Safe and Healthy County.” The Cultural Services Agency is requesting retroactive application submission approval and per Policy No. 25, the CEO authorized the submission.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Provide alternate direction to the staff.
