Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The role of the Commission is established in Chapter 2.5 of the Mendocino County Fish and Game Code; this role includes recommending expenditures to the Board of Supervisors from the Fish and Wildlife Propagation Fund that are in accordance with the requirements of the Fish and Game Code Sections 13100-13104.

Summary of Request

The Fish and Game Commission is requesting that the Board of Supervisors approve the allocation of County Fish and Game Propagation Funds in the amount of $82,521.00 for five grants, which the Commission has budgeted and is available for this purpose.   The Commission met on April 14, 2026 and May 5, 2026, evaluated and ranked 13 applications; ultimately recommending five projects to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) for funding.  The ranking of the projects included the completeness of the application, the benefit to the community, public access, site control, “shovel ready” status of the application and dollar amount requested for the project.   The five projects recommended for funding are:

1. Noyo Center for Marine Science- Red Abalone Captive Breeding Project, $25,000

2. Reef Check Foundation- Caspar Cove Kelp Restoration and Monitoring Project, $12,000

3. Mendocino Wildlife Association - Fawn Rehab Operations, $3,500

4. Ukiah Rod and Gun Club - Bill Townsend Conservation Hatchery Operations and Steelhead Education Program, $17,021

5. Eel River Recovery Project- Ten Mile Creek Watershed Invasive Species Management Bull Frog and Feral Pigs, $25,000

During the meeting, the Commission voted unanimously (5-0) to recommend that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) as well as the Mendocino County Board of Supervisor approve the funding.  On July 14, 2026 CDFW responded with support for funding of all five applications, see attached, 1.) the response from CDFW supporting the grant proposals as submitted by the Fish and Game Commission, and 2.) the draft minutes from the Fish and Game Commission Meeting of April 12, 2026 and May 5, 2026, and 3.) redacted Grant Applications.
