Summary of Request:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant program provides affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas. The Laytonville community has been working for several years with the County to open a new Library branch in Laytonville. The Friends of the Library have completed much work on preparation of the storefront location and are now renting the space to the County to prepare to open the branch.
The Library can provide healthy educational and entertainment opportunities through circulating materials and creative and educational programs. There is also a need for broadband access for which the Library is joining the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) network, which will provide high speed internet for the Laytonville branch and community. The internet will help local residents access needed resources, such as being able to apply for jobs, take classes, apply for assistance, and more.
The estimated expenses total $85,612. The USDA grant will cover 75% of the expenses or $64,209 and 25% or $21,403 of the expenses will be paid by the Library budget. The grant funds would help to cover the cost of items such as furniture, shelving, computers, circulation items such as books, DVDs, CDs, library carts and bins, and laptops for checkout.
