Summary of Request

September 20 through September 26, 2026, is recognized as Child Passenger Safety Week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a national observance dedicated to protecting children as passengers in motor vehicles. Road injuries are a leading cause of preventable death and injury among children in the United States. Properly installed and appropriately used car seats, booster seats, and seat belts significantly reduce the risk of serious injury and death in the event of a motor vehicle crash.

Mendocino County Public Health is committed to supporting parents and caregivers through education and resources that promote child passenger safety. As part of Child Passenger Safety Week, Mendocino County will join NHTSA in promoting awareness and education regarding the proper selection, installation, and use of child passenger restraints. Mendocino County Public Health offers free, one-on-one car seat safety appointments with certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) for Mendocino County residents with children ages 0 through 12. These appointments provide parents and caregivers with individualized education and assistance to help ensure children are properly restrained based on their age, size, and developmental needs.

Mendocino County recognizes September 20 through September 26, 2026, as Child Passenger Safety Week and encourages parents, caregivers, and community members to learn more about child passenger safety and the proper use of child restraints.
