Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
December 17, 2019, the Board approve the JAG grant for 2019/20, BOS # 19-269. August 18, 2020, the Board approved ratification of the 2020 JAG grant application.
Summary of Request:
For the past several years, the Sheriff’s Office (SO) has applied for and received annual Edward Byrnes JAG grants from the DOJ. The application for the 2020 was submitted in August of this year and the award was announced to us on October 18, 2020. This year’s award is $17,448. The grant funds are used to purchase video redaction and editing software for in-car recordings that is essential to the SO’s ability to comply with Assembly Bill (AB) 748, which dictates that Law Enforcement agencies have 45 calendar days to release video and audio recordings relating to a critical incident and Public Records Act requests. The funds are also used to replace aged computer equipment that is critical to the front line law enforcement staff and their support staff to assure public safety. Approval of this item will commence the 30-day period which citizens and neighborhood or community organizations may comment on this award.
The Edward Byrnes JAG grant is being submitted for retroactive consideration because the grant solicitation was released on July 9, 2020, yet the program start date is October 1, 2019.
