Summary of Request

AB 1618 (Rogers) establishes a state-administered food hunger survey under the Department of Social Services to better assess food insecurity across California. This legislation is meant to offset the USDA’s discontinuation of the Household Food Security Survey which was widely used to understand the impact of food insecurity across America.

This measure seeks to provide critical data to food banks and non-profits that help support their local communities who are in critical need of food and other basic needs services. Unfortunately, without adequate and consistent surveying to understand the needs of each community, organizations will have a limited understanding of local need or how allocate resources effectively to ensure families are not left behind. This bill helps support rural and low-income families who rely on food banks and food distributions to meet basic nutritional needs.

AB 1618 will give us the data to continue our work by ensuring that communities are counted, needs are identified, and services are delivered where they are most needed.
