Summary of Request:
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has enacted a Behavioral Health Workforce Development (BHWD) program to address the critical shortage of Behavioral Health providers in the State. BHWD has Behavioral Health Mentored Internship Program (MIP) grant funds available to assist organizations in developing and implementing in-house mentored internship programs to assist in the treatment and recovery of patients with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, or co-occurring disorders.
On May 26, 2023, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) received a notice of preliminary award for continued participation in the MIP project, as a candidate for Round 2, with a period of performance from October 1, 2023, through December 31, 2024. On August 29, 2023, the Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved the preliminary award and authorized the BHRS Director to sign the resulting grant Agreement with Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. The proposed Agreement with Cal Poly Sponsored Programs Foundation is funded by grant funds from the Agreement with Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. Through the proposed Agreement, the Cal Poly Social Work program will provide interns with the ability to train within a variety of programs, which will provide broad education and experiences for future employment. BHRS expects the partnership with the Cal Poly Social Work program to give BHRS access to a pool of motivated individuals who will bring fresh thinking and innovation to the BHRS workplace.
The proposed Agreement with Cal Poly Sponsored Programs Foundation has a retroactive start date, in order to finalize the grant Agreement with Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. first.
