The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors routinely adopts Proclamations recognizing various events and awareness days throughout the County.

Summary of Request

Nationally, April is “Child Abuse Prevention Month”. While concerns surrounding abused, neglected and exploited children continue year round, Child Abuse Prevention Month provides the Board of Supervisors the opportunity to draw the attention of the citizens of Mendocino County to the problem of child abuse and the need for good prevention services and alternative caregivers, while encouraging all of us to support efforts to ensure that all children are loved, cared for, nurtured and safe.

With April being proclaimed as Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Children’s Action Committee is focused on child and family safety with the support of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors, county departments, community partners and families.  Child abuse and neglect is every community leader’s concern and requires heightened community awareness in order to provide continuous safety for its children and youth.

Supervisor Mulheren will create a Pin Wheel Display near the flagpole at 501 Low Gap Road to raise awareness and departments, families and businesses in Mendocino County are encouraged to do the same.

The Children’s Memorial Day was established by the California Assembly in April 1997, which formally declared the fourth Friday in April as a statewide annual observance day. On the fourth Friday in April every year the Children’s Memorial Flag is to be flown statewide in memory of all the young lives lost in California due to violence in the previous year. On April 1, 2001, the United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution supporting this National Children’s Memorial Day and its regular occurrence on the fourth Friday in April. This is a day of remembrance set aside to recognize the national tragedy of violence against children. The Office of Child Abuse Prevention (OCAP)’s vision is for each county to host a Children’s Memorial Day event and to conduct a flag raising ceremony on the fourth Friday in the month of April to honor the young lives lost. Statewide participation in the raising of the Children’s Memorial Flag will increase awareness of child abuse and neglect through a unified message and facilitate broader community involvement in child abuse and neglect prevention. In addition to a statewide raising of the Children’s Memorial Flag, the OCAP also encourages all counties to observe a moment of silence and reflection to honor the Californian young lives lost to violence. This event will be held in Mendocino County on April 25, 2025 at the Department of Social Services at 727 South State Street, Ukiah CA 95482 from Noon to one pm.
