Summary of Request:
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Wildfire Prevention (WP) Grants Program provides funding for projects that reduce wildfire risk, improve public safety, and enhance community resilience in fire-threatened areas of California.
The Executive Office’s Prevention, Recovery, Resiliency, and Mitigation (PRRM) team is requesting funding for the Hopland Shaded Fuel Break Project. This project proposes the construction of approximately 1.72 miles of shaded fuel break (65 acres) along ridgelines west of Hopland, extending from Feliz Creek Road to Hewlitt Sturtevant Road.
The project area is located in a high fire hazard severity zone and forms a critical wildland-urban interface above the community of Hopland. The proposed fuel break will reduce hazardous vegetation and ladder fuels along strategic ridgelines, helping to modify fire behavior and improve the likelihood of safe and effective wildfire containment in the area.
If implemented, the project will improve wildfire protection for more than 100 structures in and around downtown Hopland while also enhancing firefighter access and operational effectiveness during wildfire incidents.
This project is consistent with the County’s strategic goals of fostering a prepared and resilient community and promoting a safe and healthy county through proactive wildfire risk reduction in a high fire hazard severity zone and enhanced protection of life, property, and infrastructure.
