Summary of Request

On July 27, 2018, the Ranch Fire of the Mendocino Complex fire began burning, ultimately growing to be the largest wildfire in California history, threatening the lives, homes, and property of Mendocino County citizens, and resulting in the evacuation of Mendocino County residents.  Firefighters from across the United States and the World were asked to provide mutual aid to battle this massive wildfire.  Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett of the Draper City Fire Department in Utah joined more than 12, 000 firefighters who responded to the call for help.  Tragically on August 13, 2018, the Battalion Chief made the ultimate sacrifice while helping to battle California’s largest ever wildfire.  Mr. Burchett was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and an American hero. He gave everything to defend the lives of others.  The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors wishes to posthumously recognize Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett for his dedication, service and his ultimate sacrifice.
