Summary of Request

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the USDA Forest Service acknowledge that National Forest System (NFS) lands are often located in remote or sparsely populated areas, creating unique challenges for public safety and law enforcement. Because State and local law enforcement responsibilities directly support the administration and regulation of NFS lands, and because the MCSO has limited resources to meet these obligations, the agencies have established a Cooperative Law Enforcement Revenue Agreement. This agreement formalizes the partnership between the MCSO and the USDA Forest Service to strengthen State and local law enforcement efforts on NFS lands. Through the agreement, the USDA Forest Service reimburses the MCSO for services provided and commits to allocating $13,000 annually over a five-year period to support patrol operations within these federal lands.

The agreement is being submitted for retroactive approval because the MCSO did not receive it from the USDA Forest Service until January 5, 2026.
