Summary of Request:
In conjunction with the American Public Health Association (APHA), and with the shared goal of creating the “healthiest nation in one generation,” the Public Health Branch of the Health and Human Services Agency requests that the Board of Supervisors proclaim April 6-12, 2020, as National Public Health Week in Mendocino County. This year marks the 25th anniversary of National Public Health Week, and, appropriately, the focus/theme is “NPHW@25: Looking Back, Moving Forward.”
During the first full week of April each year, APHA brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the nation’s health. This year, APHA has identified a specific theme for each day of the week:
• Monday: Mental Health - advocating for, and promoting emotional well-being
• Tuesday: Maternal and Child Health - ensuring the health of mothers and babies throughout the lifespan
• Wednesday: Violence Prevention - reducing personal and community violence to improve health
• Thursday: Environmental Health - protecting and maintaining a healthy planet
• Friday: Education - advocating for quality education and schools
• Saturday: Healthy Homes - ensuring access to affordable and safe housing
• Sunday: Economics - advocating for economic empowerment as the key to a healthy life
With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the implications it holds for the public health of citizens nationwide, recognizing National Public Health Week and each of its daily themes is more important than ever.
This year, the Branch is dedicating the week to Constance (Connie) J. Caldwell M.D., who passed away on November 19, 2019. Dr. Caldwell served many years as a consultant for the Mendocino County California Children’s Services program as well as the Mendocino County Public Health Officer. Her dedication to Public Health mirrored the daily themes of this week.
