Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
The Board approved a $225,000 contract at the February 9, 2021 meeting, a $115,000 contract at the November 17, 2020 meeting, and a $425,000 contract at the May 5, 2020 meeting for similar food distribution services.
Summary of Request:
Mendocino County received notice that after more than a year, the Great Plates program will be ending as of July 9, 2021. It has been a much needed resource to provide older adults with meals to help them stay safe at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Ending the program abruptly would significantly affect low-income older adults that do not qualify for other state or federal nutrition programs. Community Foundation has an existing network of community partners to provide meals to the same target population. For this contract, Community Foundation will subcontract with local senior centers/programs, Plowshares, Willits Daily Bread and Caring Kitchen to distribute prepared meals, water, and/or personal hygiene products to local residents who have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and those transitioning off of the Great Plates Delivered Program.
The attachment shows the meals distribution data Community Foundation and its network have distributed over a period of five months. According to the Community Foundation, the $250,000 in funds for June 1-December 2021 will provide a similar level of prepared meals for seniors on a monthly basis for the remainder of the year. Community partners are reporting no significant change in demand thus far this year although most hope to resume in person dining to help seniors feel less isolated now that the majority are vaccinated. They have distributed nearly 65 thousand meals over a five months period. This contract is retroactive to rapidly deploying food to those most at risk and vulnerable in the community that are dependent on food services from the Great Plates Program.
