Summary of Request:
The proposed Agreement with Ukiah Senior Center, Inc., is for the provision of Health and Welfare Information, Referral Support, and Financial Management for elderly individuals and persons with disabilities in the City of Ukiah and its surrounding areas. Funds utilized by this Agreement ensure that Mendocino County, Department of Social Services maintains an outreach staff person to carry out the provisions of this Agreement. Services include fostering community awareness of the Ukiah Senior Center and its resources, working with Adult Protective Services (APS) staff on individual case plans, and assisting clients with transportation as necessary. The Agreement also specifically funds financial management assistance for APS referred clients who would otherwise be at risk of homelessness and abuse if these services were not available. Outreach and Financial Management assistance have proven to be successful and may be a key factor in avoiding the need for APS.
Mendocino County has a significant population of persons over 65 years of age; of the 88,436 residents in Mendocino County, 17,845 are identified as over 65, with 1,998 aged 85 years or older (Mendocino-Lake Area Agency on Aging (PSA26AA) 2020-24 Area Plan). The elderly population in Mendocino County is estimated to grow by up to 20% by the year 2040. In a needs assessment survey conducted by PSA26AAA, receiving services, obtaining information about services/benefits, and loneliness, were 3 of the top 10 concerns reported by elderly individuals who participated in the survey. Vital services, such as congregate meals, meal pickup, transportation for grocery shopping, and transportation to pharmacy services to ensure medically necessary medications remain available, have been provided through this Agreement in past fiscal years. The funds provided by this Agreement ensure that the Ukiah Senior Center can continue to offer these services.
