Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
The Board adopted the Sheriff’s Office Military Equipment Use Policy 709 on August 16, 2022, per Ordinance No. 4511 pursuant to AB 481.
Summary of Request:
The Sheriff’s Office is seeking approval to purchase a new BearCat vehicle in the amount of $469,179 that will be used for search and rescue operations, as well as for use in tactical situations. The new vehicle will replace an aging BearCat vehicle that the Sheriff’s Office purchased in 2009 of which is under-powered for Mendocino County’s remote and rugged terrain and does not have the new safety features and enhanced rescue abilities of a newer model BearCat vehicle. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has expressed an interest in purchasing the existing BearCat from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office for approximately $150,000, which cannot occur until after the new vehicle is received. Any revenue from the sale of the 2009 BearCat will be returned to the Asset Forfeiture account to help offset the cost of the new vehicle.
The requested vehicle is classified as military equipment under the Sheriff’s Office Military Equipment Use Policy 709, Section 709.1.1, which was adopted by the Board on August 16, 2022, per Ordinance No. 4511 pursuant to AB 481. The requested vendor, Lenco Armored Vehicles, has been awarded several Cooperative Purchasing Agreements, in which public safety and government agencies are authorized to purchase equipment at the costs identified in the Agreements. The Purchasing Agreements can be found online at the link provided below.
