Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The Board approved Lunch at the Library application on February 28, 2023: item 3s.

Summary of Request

The California State Library provides an annual funding opportunity for libraries to coordinate with local food providers to serve lunch and provide educational activities for students up to age 18. During the summer months, youth have limited access to healthy meals and learning and enrichment programs. Lunch at the Library helps prevent the “summer slide” through healthy meals, reading, and educational opportunities.

This is the first year that Mendocino County Library has applied for this grant, which will provide the services at the Ukiah Branch and the Coast Community Branch in Point Arena. The program serves the community in a holistic way, creating a summer safety net by feeding both stomachs and minds.

Mendocino County Library is partnering with local school districts, which will provide the meals and the library staff will provide the enrichment activities. The money will be used for supplies and materials, employee expenses, and promotion of the program. The Lunch at the Library Program supports the County Strategic Plan goal of a Safe and Healthy County by providing food and enrichment activities for youth who need it.
