Summary of Request:
MCAVHN (Mendocino County AIDS/Viral Hepatitis Network) Care and Prevention Network has been serving the local Mendocino County community since 1987, providing services and support to persons affected by substance use disorders and behavioral health conditions, as well as harm reduction services for the prevention of Hepatitis C and HIV. Through previous Agreements with the County of Mendocino, MCAVHN has provided services in compliance with best practices of the California Department of Public Health’s Syringe Exchange Certification Program. The purpose of these services is to reduce the spread of infectious diseases that threaten public health, improve the safe disposal of syringes while reducing the inappropriate disposal of syringes and medications that threaten the public, and engage individuals who are injection drug users to connect them with recovery and treatment services.
MCAVHN’s harm reduction and needle exchange services for Mendocino County will continue through the proposed Agreement, including: organizing regularly scheduled needle exchanges and collecting used needles from people who inject drugs; providing Hepatitis C and HIV education, counseling, and testing; providing Naloxone and Narcan trainings countywide; collaborating with nonprofit partners to coordinate efforts; scheduling on-site visits with Mendocino County tribal entities that are open to receiving trainings and services; and providing regularly scheduled outreach and engagement services throughout Mendocino County.
