Summary of Request

First 5 Mendocino introduced Positive Parenting Program (Triple P), an evidence-based program, to

Mendocino County over ten years ago for families with questions about young children’s behavior. The Triple P program has now evolved to help families with children of all ages find positive solutions to child behavioral problems and help with children who have a developmental delay or disability. Triple P is the parenting education curriculum adopted by Family and Children’s Services (FCS) for parents and caregivers involved with FCS, and a child abuse and neglect prevention program for families at risk and the general community.

First 5 Mendocino is the only agency in the county that provides and coordinates training certification for Triple P instructors, which helps ensure fidelity to the training model. At the request of FCS, First 5 Mendocino has continued to expand the offering of Triple P classes countywide, through virtual platforms, and in Spanish. The classes covered through this proposed Agreement will be available free of charge to any parent or caregiver in Mendocino County to help reduce child abuse and neglect, and to assist FCS in providing parenting education to families who are in formal cases with FCS. In addition, the Mendocino County Family Law Court refers parents who are separating to the Transitions Group, which assists parents to adjust and manage the transition from a two-parent family to a single-parent family, or different family dynamic. Per post-tests, most participants who complete Triple P groups rated increases in parenting consistency, positive encouragement, and parent-child relationship.

Between July 1, 2024 until March 30, 2025, First 5 taught 12 Triple P classes with 52 parents attending classes. Out of the 52 parents, 44 scored with a reduced rating on the PAFAS (Parental Acceptance, Facilitation, and Affective Support) and/or Acrimony Scale.  PAFAS is a scale used to measure the quality of a parent-child relationship, particularly focusing on parental acceptance, facilitation, and affective support. The Acrimony Scale is used to measure the level of conflict and negativity in a parent-child or parent-partner relationship.
