PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS:
On May 7, 2024, the Board adopted the 2024 proclamation for National Correctional Officers Week.
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
National Correctional Officers Week is observed during the first full week in May of each year to recognize the hard work, dedication, and contributions of correctional officers who work in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country.
Correctional officers face dangerous situations every day in their work lives which creates a heightened state of vigilance to protect themselves and others. As part of the final step in the justice system, correctional officers are tasked with carrying out and enforcing orders of the court. Officers adhere to strict security protocols and procedures of which are often changed or updated. Training to keep up with the latest rules is an ongoing part of the job. Correctional officers work out of sight from the general public and, therefore, their service is often forgotten. However, they are a critical force in the array of public safety services to the community. They play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of our communities and demonstrate courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment in their daily duties to ensure the welfare of incarcerated individuals, staff and the general public.
