SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
On October 28, 2022, the Sheriff's Office entered into an Agreement with Joshua Sternberg who provides Jail Gardening Management Services as well as working with and teaching agriculture lessons to the inmates in the Mendocino County Jail. Mr. Sternberg has worked with the Jail Kitchen staff to plan out vegetable production, lead recovery groups during the gardening work day, along with in-depth classroom lessons for inmates on regenerative agriculture. He is qualified to facilitate college credit for the inmate garden crew because he is also an instructor at Mendocino College. This enables not only the garden crew to obtain college credit for the work they do, but for a larger subset of the inmate population to start an Agriculture certificate through the college while in custody, which will help to guide the inmate population towards the possibility of a career upon being released after incarceration.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION/MOTION:
Return to staff for alternate handling.
