Summary of Request

Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health, FIRST 5 Mendocino and the Mendocino County Breastfeeding Coalitions request that the Board of Supervisors join the nation in adopting a Proclamation declaring the month of August 2019 as Breastfeeding Month in Mendocino County. This Proclamation is to raise the community’s awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and to promote support for mothers who choose to breastfeed. Breastfeeding has been proven to prevent myriad diseases and is an important component of emotional health for both the infant and mother.

Additionally, each year during the month of August Mendocino County’s inland and coastal breastfeeding coalitions recognize exemplary employers who are complying with current California State Law, that requires lactation accommodations and support in the workplace. This award helps highlight the importance of breastfeeding for the infant’s and mother’s well-being and the role employer’s play in helping support the health of the infant and mother.
