RECOMMENDED ACTION/MOTION:

Adopt Proclamation declaring the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day in Mendocino County; and authorize Chair to sign same; direct staff to take the steps necessary to designate the second Monday in October as an official County holiday to be known as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Mendocino County; and make minor corrections to Mendocino County Code for purposes of consistency.

PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS:
On October 6, 2015, the Board unanimously approved Resolution No. 15-150 recognizing October 12, 2015 as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
The County currently recognizes the second Monday in October as Columbus Day and includes it on the list of County approved holidays in Mendocino County Code section 3.04.190. Columbus Day is recognized as a Federal holiday but is only observed by approximately half of the States, including California. Increasingly, in recognition of the genocide and other grave injustices inflicted on Indigenous People following European contact, cities, counties and community groups are recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day.
