Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
On October 6, 2015, the Board unanimously approved Resolution No. 15-150 recognizing October 12, 2015 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Summary of Request:
The County currently recognizes the second Monday in October as Columbus Day and includes it on the list of County approved holidays in Mendocino County Code section 3.04.190. Columbus Day is recognized as a Federal holiday but is only observed by approximately half of the States, including California. Increasingly, in recognition of the genocide and other grave injustices inflicted on Indigenous People following European contact, cities, counties and community groups are recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It is appropriate that Mendocino County, which is home to numerous tribal groups and organizations, including at least ten federally recognized Native American tribes, officially recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It is requested that the Board direct staff to take the steps necessary to designate the second Monday in October as an official County holiday to be known henceforth as Indigenous Peoples’ Day and amend the Mendocino County Code list of officially approved holidays.
Additionally, in reviewing the current ordinance, Counsel has also identified a few minor corrections and style changes that would improve consistency within the Code.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Do not adopt proclamation nor direct staff to take the steps necessary to designate the second Monday in October as an official County holiday to be known henceforth as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Mendocino County.
